To get to Hadestown, you gotta take the long way down to the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium as it hosts the Broadway spectacle for one whole week from November 14th to November 19th! As part of the North American Tour, the production will continue its run through the spring of next year, delighting audiences across major cities in both Canada and the United States.

Pain and suffering reigns supreme in this land of lost souls. Entirely narrated by Hermes, Hadestown takes place in the nightmarish, industrial realm of King Hades. In the grip of crushing poverty, our young lovers, Orpheus and Eurydice, grapple with an overwhelming dilemma: one driven by artistic passion, the other haunted by the struggle for survival. Eurydice, compelled by the relentless insistence of the Fates, willingly descends into Hades’ labyrinthine factory, bound by an eternal contract. Ride along through the capitalist underworld alongside Orpheus as he sets out to rescue his beloved in this musical filled with jazzy and folk show tunes.

Hadestown’s Broadway premiere garnered resounding acclaim, earning a staggering fourteen nominations at the 73rd Tony Awards. The production triumphed in eight categories, securing coveted titles such as Best Musical and Best Original Score. Additionally, it won multiple Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Awards, clinching awards like Outstanding New Broadway Musical, Outstanding Director of a Musical, and Outstanding New Score.

The original version of Hadestown premiered in 2006, and in 2007, it embarked on a tour spanning two states, Vermont and Massachusetts. With uncertainties about the production’s fate, the creator, Anaïs Mitchell, took the bold step of releasing it as a concept album in 2010.

“An affirmation of art’s transformative power, with the sort of musicality you rarely hear on Broadway.” – Rolling Stone

“The best new musical of the season.” – The Wall Street Journal

During a recent interview, Mitchell, talked about the ideas that motivated her to develop Hadestown over many years. She explained how she was just starting her music career and driving from one small gig to another when she created the music and lyrics for “Wait for Me.” This further inspired her to tell the story of Orpheus, a young and optimistic artist who believed that through his beautiful music, he could change even the toughest of situations in the world, like moving a heart of stone.
