In the Ukrainian language, Shumka translates to 'whirlwind'. This is the perfect moniker for Canada's premier folk Ukrainian dance ensemble. After decades of amazing displays of artistry, art, and emotion around the world, the celebrated ensemble returns to their adopted homeland to celebrate 60 impressive years since embarking on tour.
This one of a kind dance ensemble will present a full-length performance and a repertoire of intimate concert pieces. If you haven’t already heard, Shumka is a professional dance theater touring production that has spent decades bringing the rich heritage of Ukrainian folk culture to life. The show will combine the unique genre of Ukrainian dance with classical and contemporary movement. The result? It’s a 4-million-cubic-foot performing arts venue celebrated for its first class production facilities. Since opening its door in 1957, the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium has welcomed a number of locally and internationally acclaimed spectacles including the likes of Dirty Dancing, Mary Poppins, Pretty Woman, Aladdin, Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera.
