Anaïs Mitchell wrote the music, lyrics, and book for the show Hadestown. It tells a retold version of the time-honored myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young girl facing starvation, sets out to work in a bleak industrial portrayal of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and chill temperatures. Her beau Orpheus, a poor singer-songwriter, embarks on a journey to reclaim her.
In its debut Broadway launch, the musical garnered 14 Tony Awards nominations, achieving eight coveted accolades. It earned itself the sought-after designation of ‘Best Musical,’ bringing immense joy to the ardent fans. The presentation premiered on Broadway on April 17, 2019, receiving commendation. It was commended for its direction and the remarkable acting by André De Shields.
