The Alberta Ballet is a premiere ballet company in Canada. Since their establishment in 1966, they have performed among the best versions of ballet productions. This is a testament to their vision of encouraging "creativity, inspiring excellence, and fostering a lifelong love for dance through innovative performances, rigorous training, and inclusive education, enriching the cultural fabric of our community and beyond." For many Albertans, their performances are a staple throughout the year, and they continue to push the boundaries of excellent ballet productions and inspire more people to dance.
The ballet company was formed by Ruth Carse and Muriel Taylor in 1958. With a lot of hard work put into its development, it became a professional company in 1966. They settled on the Northern and Southern Jubilee Auditorium, where they will be found performing today. Among the highlights of the company's history is staging many choreographies of well-known ballet directors and iconic people. Their production of Carmen was a huge success that it toured in China. Fiddle and the Drum found the company collaborating with legendary folk artist Joni Mitchell. This production would go on to touch Elton John, who then gave permission to the company to create Elton. Currently, they are mesmerized with their productions of The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Der Wolf and the Rite of Spring, and Hansel and Gretel.
Hansel and Gretel is an old Brothers Grimm fairytale well-known to most people. Bringing it to the Jubilee stage, Loughlan Prior choreographed the company. His take on the classic tale is influenced by old-school black-and-white movies and fairytale adventures. It is more sugary than the original and is a treat to those who watch it. They also have added a new array of characters that will surely leave a trail of candy goodness in your mind after watching.
