Set in the 60s, Hairspray tells the story of an energetic and fun-loving high school girl, Tracy Turnblad. After school, she and her friend Penny rush home to catch a popular teenage dance program on TV called The Corny Collins Show. Much to their delight, the show will be holding a city-wide audition. Tracy’s mother, who is not amused by the loud TV show, is not too pleased with her overweight daughter auditioning for a highly-publicized program. She fears her daughter will suffer the embarrassment of being turned down or, worse, ridiculed. Meanwhile, Penny’s mother is also not happy because the show happens to play “face music.” After obtaining permission from her father, Tracy races to the audition and performs in front of the cruel producer, Velma Von Tussle. She was rejected due to her size. The next day, Tracy receives detention in school for the inappropriate height of her hairstyle. There, she meets a dancer named Seaweed J. Stubbs, who teaches her some new dance moves. Tracy uses these dance moves when she meets Corny Collins at the Sophomore Hop. The TV host likes the girl’s incredible energy and invites her to be part of the show. Velma Von Tussle is distraught and swears to ruin Tracy Turnblad’s career. Will Tracy achieve her dreams?
