Fiddler On The Roof tells the story of Tevye, a hardworking milkman with five daughters. Reb Teyve and his family are Jewish, living in a small village called Anatevka in pre-revolutionary Russia. Having five daughters, Teyve is responsible for looking for five husbands for his grown children. The family follows the Jewish custom of engaging a matchmaker to find husbands for the young women. It is up to Tevye if he would approve of the potential husband or not. Local matchmaker, Yente, comes in to match the oldest daughter, Tzeitel, to a man her father approves. However, things become complicated because Tzeitel is actually in love with a poor tailor. With the first match not going well, will the other daughters cooperate, or will they also choose their fates? Meanwhile, the family’s troubles grow when the town czar requires the Jewish community to leave Anatevka.
Fiddler On The Roof’s Broadway production broke records as one of the most successful musicals and longest-running musicals (ten years) until it was surpassed by Grease. In 1965, Fiddler On The Roof won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Choreography. Seven years later, the show received the Tony Award for Longest-Running Musical in History. Decades later, the musical’s revival also received numerous nominations and awards. In 1991, Fiddler On The Roof won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The 2016 production, led by director Barlett Sher, won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a Musical. The 2019 London revival won Best Revival at the Laurence Olivier Awards.
