Hailed by the Toronto Star as "Canada's National Treasure," Shumka is a traditional dance style of Ukrainian origin. Performed by well-rounded, ballet-trained Ukrainian dancers with high-performance levels, Shumka means "whirlwind." For more than 60 years, the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers' signature dance style has shown a powerful display of artistry, energy, and emotion through its uniqueness that shows Ukraine's rich history.

Over the years, Shumka has been creating a broad scope of original and collaborative interpretive works presented in different types of arts, such as music and dance. These interpretations are built upon the foundations of the artists' Canadian and Ukrainian life experiences and the rich heritage of the Ukrainian folk culture.

As a celebration of Shumka's legacy, Shumka Dance Company will be touring Canada for the 10th time this year. The whirlwind of the renowned company will be witnessed this May 15th, Sunday, at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. This year, the company's tour will feature two new works, including Shumka's whimsical "Mosquito's Wedding" and the "Echoes of Hopak." The Mosquito's Wedding is a love story with a strong theme of love and is deemed by critics as a true feast for the eyes. On the other hand, Echoes of Hopak explores the historical path of the whirlwind while paying tribute to over 60 years of Shumka's artistic journey.

In addition, the tour production will include Shumka's most recent film project, "Promised Land," a tribute to the 130th Anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, and a dance tribute to the conflict in Ukraine.

As the official website of Shumka states, "Ukrainian dance and music is the soul of the people." Thus, it should be celebrated to show Ukraine's strength as a nation. Now, more than ever, we should show our support. Click on the "Get Tickets" link to order your tickets now!
